In 2004, not a single team won the DARPA Grand Challenge. By 2005, 5 teams completed the challenge, with Sebastian Thrun's team coming in first place.

In 2006, Nvidia introduced Compute Unified Device Architecture. By 2012, Andrew Ng and Daphne Kohler would launch Coursera with their course on Machine Learning, and 1.3 million people registered. Not to be outdone, Sebastian Thrun put his course up online, and over a million registered for it. He started Udacity.
