Assessment of the Life Design System

The Life Design System should be considered State of the Art, and is one of the primary efforts we see as working towards Coherence. The Life Design System is managed from the Copenhagen Office, overseen by Hector Mejia. Troels Villumsen is our SPOC.

We believe the new dominant and scaling "species" of companies align around:

  1. a Unified Design System and

  2. a Unified API, These two workflows could be thought of as the most vital organs of State of the Art company health.

We are also observing that software development is becoming more Visual. This is, in part, due to the rise of Low-Code tools, and Agentic AI, particularly in setting up Sequential Agents. Therefore, our primary perspective is that the Life Design System can contribute more to the organization by expanding its mandate and scope of concern, and the audience that utilizes it.

Our Angle on our Work

The Life Design System is State of the Art and is being utilized across teams and geographies for UI design and implementation. Therefore, our hope was to be thought-provoking on what might be included in a Design System, and how the Life Design System might impact workflows in the larger organization.

Right now, better visual communication can dramatically impact Product Development Workflow; even more specific -- the handoffs.

We foresee an accelerating force on software development as two trends collide: the need to refactor and rewrite code at accelerating paces, and the possibility of using AI Code Generators, and AI Powered Text Editors or IDEs and Terminal Emulators to let Large Language Models do much of the heavy lifting for mind-numbing boiler-plate parts of writing code. This creates a phenomenon we call Lego-Kit Engineering

By empowering Visual Leadership, visual communication and collaboration, a large swath of hangups, misunderstandings, meetings to get more clarity, etc, and other forms of Drag (on Productivity) can be reduced or even eliminated.

Broadening the Impact of the Life Design System

We, the The Lossless Group believes the the Life Design System should become more of a centerpiece to the Laerdal organization. Including, but not limited to:

Therefore, we hope that the Life Design System can expand its mandate and have starter kits and component libraries that can streamline the development of:

  • Diagrams and Blueprints

  • Project Planning and Product Roadmaps

  • Documents

  • Presentations

  • Posters

  • Screens (like displays around the office)

  • Reports

    • Data Stories

    • Data Visualizations

Meta Design System

What is a Meta Design System? Well, we think it should open the mandate and influence of the Life Design System. Hopefully, the team finds some of it useful enough to incorporate.

This is part of our CARBS framework, which stands for Charms, Anchors, Recipes, Blueprints, Starters.

Design, for those indoctrinated and who have sworn the oath, is assuredly part art and part science. Yet in both the art and science, there are always a set of beliefs and patterns that guide a somewhat repeatable, disciplined, creative process.

Part of that process is to communicate and align on designs that may otherwise not fully align, not fully resonate, and not provide the lasting guidance to the many-act-as-one necessity of teamwork and organizational momentum. This is particularly true in the Research to UX to UI to Development handoffs, not to mention "managing up" to anyone who might be checking in on strategy, productivity, and results.

And so, The Lossless Group believes in the Meta Design System and Visual Leadership.
